About Us

The   Electrical and  Electronic Waste Management Fund (E-waste Fund) as an organization was established in the year 2019 to provide funding for the management of electrical or electronic waste to further reduce its adverse impact on human health and the environment.

The Fund was established to fulfill the provisions in the second part of the Hazardous and Electronic Waste Control and management Act, 2016 (Act 917) which has been absorbed into the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124).

The Act imposes an Advanced Eco Levy on Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) manufactured in or imported into the country. These levies together with monies from other sources, is expected to be used by the Fund to manage the E-waste in the country.

The work of the E-waste Fund is supported by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST) and the Environmental protection Agency (EPA).

STATUTORY OBJECTIVES/FUNCTIONS

In accordance with Act 1124, the Electrical and Electronic Waste Management Fund shall perform the following statutory functions:

  • Provide support for the construction, expansion, operation, and maintenance of electrical and electronic waste recycling and treatment plants.

  • Support training activities and capacity-building initiatives for stakeholders involved in e-waste management.
  • Promote research into efficient treatment technologies and sustainable recycling solutions for e-waste.
  • Support research into methods for the preservation, prevention, and control of electrical and electronic waste.
  • Facilitate the publication of reports, research findings, and environmental assessments related to electrical and electronic waste management.
  • Ensure monitoring, compliance, and enforcement of the provisions of Act 1124 and related environmental regulations.
  • Educate the public on safe disposal practices and the environmental and health risks associated with improper electronic waste management.
  • Offer incentives to encourage the collection, transportation, and responsible disposal of electrical and electronic waste.
  • Promote and support the collection, safe disposal, and recycling of electrical and electronic waste nationwide.
  • Address matters relating to hazardous and other waste and undertake any additional actions necessary to achieve the objectives of the Fund.
