Ghana constructs electronic waste Handover Center at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC). The process started in March 2021 with a ceremony witnessed the participation of various industry stakeholders dedicated to promoting the environmentally responsible recycling and disposal of electrical and electronic equipment waste.
During his keynote speech, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology & Innovation (MESTI) highlighted that the Handover Center represents a practical solution to address the prevalent issue of indiscriminate burning and improper disposal of e-waste across the country. The Handover Center will function as a storage facility for e-waste materials collected from both scrap dealers and individuals.
In order to encourage the adoption of proper channels for disposing of e-waste materials, the Minister mentioned that the project will provide incentive packages to informal e-waste collectors. Additionally, it will subsidize the collection and cover the additional costs associated with e-waste recycling.
